Ronald Searle: "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines"

What is one to do when a fantastic illustration comes along but it is offered at a stratospheric price? As might be expected, the artwork receives no bids, and when the item is relisted the price slowly begins to drop--but not nearly enough to elicit any bidding activity. At some point, one expects, the price may be lowered to a reasonable level and find a buyer, but the owner, who turns 100 during this time period, decides he would rather keep it hanging on his wall than drop the price any further.

That's what happened to a terrific illustration by Ronald Searle from the title sequence of "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (Twentieth Century Fox, 1965). Initially offered in the $18,000 to $20,000 price range, it subsequently failed to sell for $13,000 to $17,000 and has not been relisted. Sale prices for Searle illustrations occasionally may reach this range, but it is far from the norm.

Charles Addams Birthday Greetings

In 1975, Charles Addams sent this hand-colored birthday greeting featuring Grandmama from the Addams Family. The artwork, approximately the size of a postcard, sold for between $400 and $500 on eBay back in 2005.

I am grateful to reader David from Manhattan for providing this eBay image and information about the sale from his personal archives. EBay, as you may know, does not maintain auction listings with any consistency beyond approximately three months. Over the years many images of great cartoon artwork have come and gone, and once they're gone they are pretty much irretrievable. I've managed to preserve a few wonderful images over the years, and I use this blog to make many of these public and, I hope, permanent. It occurs to me that I am not the only one with such a personal virtual collection, and others who have similar obsessive tendencies might be willing to share some of their archival material here on Attempted Bloggery. It is not easy to describe exactly what I am looking for, but if you've seen a few blog posts, you probably have a good idea. A good starting point would be original drawings, published or unpublished, by the artists typically featured on this blog, particularly but not exclusively those associated with The New Yorker. I generally look for as much information as possible to go with each image, including the source of the image and the sale price, if known. So, if you have access to something as nourishing as Grandmama's birthday cake, please contact me at my email address.

Chon Day: Hankering for Floozies

A page of finished original cartoon art by Chon Day was recently listed on eBay. Having failed to sell at $59, it was subsequently listed at $49, although at the moment it is not being offered at all. What I can't tell you is whether Richard here will answer his wife's question honestly.

Addams Delegates

A preliminary sketch by Charles Addams depicts a number of U.N. delegates, including the distinguished gentleman from--Transylvania. This was listed on eBay for quite a while before being sold in January for a rather undiplomatic price.
